Exciting News from Geshe Tashi

Khen Rinpoche Geshe Tashi Tsering recently met His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Geshe la submitted his resignation as Abbot of Sera Mey Monastery. In the photo above, you can see His Holiness accepting.

At the same meeting His Holiness asked Geshe la to become the Director of the Dalai Lama Centre for Tibetan and Ancient Indian Wisdom in Bodhgaya!

Geshe la accepted and expects to begin work on this new centre over the summer.

The HHDL Centre for Tibetan and Ancient Indian Wisdom will work to fulfil His Holiness’s vision for a new Nalanda to be established in India. This project is very much in its infancy. His Holiness only laid the foundation stone for this huge project in January 2023.

As posted in His Holiness’s website, at that event, the Honourable Kiren Rijiju, Minister for Law and Justice in the Indian Central Government explained:

“His Holiness states that the wisdom of Nalanda nurtured by such masters as Nagarjuna, Aryadeva and Chandrakirti, a tradition grounded in reason and logic, was kept alive in Tibet. It was concerned less with religion and more with a science of the mind. A centre to study along these lines is being established and people from around the world will be able to come and study here.”

Professor Samdhong Rinpoché made a speech, saying that since the materialistic outlook associated with science and technology has failed to bring peace and satisfaction to the world, ancient Indian knowledge and values may fill the gap.

In the past, Rinpoché asserted, Indian schools of thought were mutually enriched when they engaged in an exchange of ideas founded on reason and logic. Tibetan tradition has kept this approach alive. With the establishment of this Centre, these traditions will be restored to India.

You can read more about this project on His Holiness’s website here.

As you can see, this is a vast and ambitious project. It is an extraordinary honour for Geshe Tashi.  We are sure you will feel as proud and delighted as we do.

We will pass on any updates as soon as we have them.

With best wishes,
